The Search.

Thursday, July 17th, 2003

It seems to me that many of life’s lessons present themselves in fascinating ways. Some simple, some increasingly complex. I have had the fortunate opportunity to spend a week in one of the most beautiful places that our wonderful world has to offer. A place surrounded by mountains so beautiful and still, words no longer become essential descriptors. It’s hard to ask for a more perfect reflection space or more wise professor.

I have spent much of my later years in search of the many wonderful experiences of life, perhaps even for why life goes the way it chooses, and what it has in store for someone. This is something I am sure many have contemplated on a solitary night under the stars. The answer never seems very far but always changing form.

It has only become increasingly clear to me while engaging in silent conversation with the charcoal on white peaks of the South American Andes that it is not so important as to what life has in store for you, but more that you let each day and experience penetrate your soul, becoming a part of what makes you who you are.

More often than not we are concerned with what exactly is going to happen in the future, be it with your life or your current relationships with friends and family. Included in this is an overshadowing of what may have happened in times past. These preoccupations begin to define your being and essentially trap you into a product of something that you have no enjoyment of. Intrinsically it is essential to understand that maintaining the person that you are, where you are, will bring you through life with implicit happiness.

The basic assumption is that you can learn something from every piece of the world around you in any specific day. While standing atop mountains in western Argentina at 14,000 feet you begin to understand that without a love and absolute respect for the world and the powers that created it will you begin to find your way to the bottom of this mountain. You begin to realize that fundamentally you are made of the same things as the mountains, and for that matter, the world. It is the essential workings of the harmony between you that bring you together at certain points in your lives.

As you move through life it is essential to listen to the beating soul of the universe within your heart for you to move to true happiness. While most of us believe that this happiness is achieved in the end objective of infinite money, a great family, or great career; it is essential to understand that the end objective is unessential to achieving your dreams. The only essential element is to maintain an understanding of the energy around you. If you continue to be true to yourself and harmonious with the world, the world will work to put you in situations to which your heart will be complete.

For me standing atop that mountain peak, in some of the most remote areas on earth has always been a dream of mine. And on that day I was accompanied by some of the most pure and true people I have ever known. The dream brought me to the top of that mountain, filled my heart with happiness, and an understanding of the harmony and respect needed helped me to enjoy the ride down.

Enjoy life, breathe deeply, and love yourself.

Portillo

Words cannot encapsulate how incredible it has been to be down here for the last week. Today we had the fortunate opportunity to join a heli-guide by trade who guides for Weigle’s in the Northern winter and Portillo in the Southern winter (living the dream) for some heli-skiing in Argentina.
