Why are companies, but more specifically, beer companies, “re-wrapping” their products then marketing their new marketing?
I’ve been seeing a lot of this lately. Especially on my way up the 101. Beer companies are putting their beer in the same bottles and cans and simply creating new graphic design. Then, they are marketing their innovative “new” marketing by talking about the new graphics. I assume this is to make sure that you know you are drinking their beer even though the can looks slightly different.
Why would you market your new marketing? Why not change the can altogether? Why not put together a street team and engage your customers face-to-face, peer-to-peer instead of spending millions on billboards telling people about the new graphic wrap on your can?

A great list from my sister…
—
1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.
2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
3. Keep learning! Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop”…and the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s.
4. Enjoy the simple things.
5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
8. Cherish your health! If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
9. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.
10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

So, I was on a cruise ship in March. People get drunk on cruise ships. Really drunk. I was standing on the top deck one night, looking at the very low railing and the ridiculous distance to the water. Thinking: that is a really long fall and we are going really fast. Does anyone ever fall? If they do, what happens? Well, sadly, here it is:
Coast Guard Calls Off Passenger Search
SAN DIEGO (AP) – The Coast Guard called off a search Sunday for a cruise ship passenger believed to have fallen overboard.
The cruise ship passenger – a 37-year-old woman whose name was not released – is believed to have fallen into the Pacific Ocean about 30 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico, said Petty Officer Robert Lanier, a Coast Guard spokesman.
A search was canceled after rescue crews scoured the area for nearly 16 hours, the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard received a call from Carnival Corp.’s Carnival Pride ship at 1 a.m. Sunday, three hours after the woman failed to report for dinner, Lanier said. No one saw her fall overboard. more…

Blogging has tipped the point. Exponentially. There are now personal blogs, CEO blogs, market blogs, pet blogs, call-girl blogs, blogs on blogging, blogs about how not to blog, blogs on blogs on blogs. There are even those that claim to know and set the rules to what a blog should be. It it’s a business blog it should be this way, if you are writing about your family it should be this way, if you are a celebrity news anchor it should be this way.
I’ve been around in the blogosphere since the beginning. I’ve watched it evolve and grow from being something that everyone gawked at. Those of us that care deeply about it have spent a lot of time just marketing and selling the idea of blogging. Blog is even a word in the dictionary now. On top of that it’s no longer just in the dictionary, it’s the number one word of the year.
To that tune, we’ve obviously got a lot of interest and a whole lot of people who think that they should define what a blog is and what it should be. To those people, I think you have an interest that is contrary to the entire movement itself. Blogging is popular because there is no standard. It’s an open window into someones head. It’s the visceral response to a daily observation. It’s a pointed opinion on a unique daily life. There is no “blog standard”, because that’s exactly what a blog isn’t. A standard. And that’s where it’s freedom, individuality, ubiquity, and pervasiveness originate.
Lets leave the blogging to the people that want to share ideas, not control them. Standards and control will only destroy the candid nature of blogs wether they are personal, community, or corporate.
As Seth Godin said:
“Here’s the problem. Blogs work when they are based on:
Candor
Urgency
Timeliness
Pithiness and
Controversy
(maybe Utility if you want six).”
