Moving

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

Moving is the surest way to make the blood boil. I’m actually almost positive I said that somewhere in this blog the last time I moved. If you really, really, wanted to call me out on it I’m sure you can dig it up somewhere.

This move went decidedly better than most of my last. I got rid of a bunch of stuff. Gave a bunch of stuff to Goodwill (on a side note, the Goodwill San Francisco looks as nice as an Old Navy inside). And, now have my “stuff” minimized to just the “needs” and less of the “wants.” I find this satisfying.

I also noticed something that I’m going to call Dave’s Law of Moving and Technology. Or, the Move-Time-Technology Ratio. In that, as time goes on, every time I move, I need to move less technology.

I’ve noticed this as the years go by that the amount of technology that I have to move in order to get my essential work done drops by half. The laptops are smaller (although I have a small trail of old ones following me), the speakers are smaller, and the desk area I need is getting smaller.

This seems about right. As technology is getting smaller and more effecient, I’m needing less to get things done. The move gets easier. Gone are the days of hauling a huge 19″ CRT monitor from Montana to Colorado in my Subaru for college.

I can’t wait for a day when the things that you “need” to own are small enough and light enough that moving becomes even easier.

Happy Sunday.

Earthquake!

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

An earthquake back home in Helena? Whoa.

My mother and I both attended elementary school at the same school in Helena. Difference being that when she was there, the top floor was disintegrated in a huge earthquake. It sits directly on a fault line, four blocks from my house.

And I thought California was the freaky place to be. Be well my fellow Helenans.

In Helena.

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

Just a couple of the many reasons I love my hometown of Helena, Montana:

1) The Staggering Ox (best sandwhich in the world. seriously. they’ve got a patent. you have to sign an NDA just to work there.)
2) The best sunsets (hands down) I have ever seen (consistently) in the world.

Great Helena photos coming soon.
