TED Talk: Barry Schwartz on the need for more practical wisdom.

TED

Here is another one of the best TED Talks from this year’s conference. Barry Schwartz’s argument for more practical wisdom. An argument against more rules (which create mediocrity) and excessive reliance on incentives (which demoralize professional activity).

But, most importantly (and to me personally) he argues that the most important virtue you can ever embody in your life is to: “Do the right thing.” Enjoy.

Best of TED 2009 – Elizabeth Gilbert: A different way to think about creative genius

Monday, February 9th, 2009

My experience last week at TED was inspiring and humbling on many levels. There were so many incredible talks that it is hard to even put together a highlight post. But, one talk stood out above all of the rest and it looks like the TED Community whole heartedly agreed. Today the TED team posted Elizabeth Gilbert’s “A different way to think about creativity.” This talk is moving beyond words for anyone who lives the creative life every day.

Here it is. Enjoy.

Bill Gates Asks Two Big Questions

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Two days ago, I sent out several tweets about the incredible talk that Bill Gates gave here at TED. In an absolutely genius marketing move, he released a few mosquitos into the audience, to not only make his talk memorable, but to spread the message that these questions are important to the future of humanity. He also admits to being an optimist and says “I believe any problem can be solved.” Above all, I’m an optimist as well, and so to hear that from him, was really cool.

This is the first talk available online from TED this year, and one of the most important to think deeply about. So, I’ve shared it with you here. Enjoy.

At TED This Week

TED

This week I was invited to attend an incredible conference called TED. The chance to attend TED, for me, is a deeply meaningful one. Of all of the conferences in the world, TED aligns with my personal values more than any of the others. With a mantra of “Ideas Worth Spreading” and a focus on ideas, creativity and ingenuity in technology, entertainment and design, the people and community that surround TED are amazing. I’m truly humbled and grateful to be a new member of the community this year.

So far, the experience has been humbling, inspiring, and moving on many levels. To me, the pursuit of great ideas and making them happen is what life is all about. TED is full of people who share a similar outlook. Anytime I hear a great idea or nugget of inspiration I’ve been sending it out via Twitter (@davemorin). Here are a few of the best from yesterday:

Juan Enriquez – Three important trends: engineering of cells, tissue and robots. Humans are taking control of evolution of the species. #TED

Bill Gates: “If we improve health, peak population growth will stabilize 1 billion people below current projections.” #TED

Tim Berners-Lee: “Now, I want you to put your data on the web.” #TED

“Its called Linked Data. I want you to make it. I want you to demand it. And, I think it is an idea worth spreading.” Agreed, Tim. #TED

Seth Godin: Tell a story. Connect a Tribe. Lead a movement. Make change. #TED

Seth Godin: Challenge status quo. Build a culture. Have curiosity. Connect people. Being a leader gives you charisma. Commit. #TED

A huge amount of respect and admiration goes out to Chris Anderson and the entire TED team for putting on a truly first class show.

Original and totally genius marketing. Hulu and the folks at NBC Universal are not messing around when it comes to the internet :)
