Radioactive Cows
Here I was driving up to the mountains to go skiing. I generally take a route from my place that takes me right across “Rocky Flats”. Yes this is where they produced something like 90% of all of the nuclear warheads for america’s vast nuclear arsenal. Now, it’s sign has been changed now to say “Rocky Flats Environmental Center” or something like that. Right. Now the reason for my concern is this. In a country where the entire beef industry can be shut down because of one mad cow, what I saw that day leads me to something of a concern. This area is a superfund site. An area that technically can be considered a national disaster because of the amount of radiation around it. As I drove by, I see a herd of bovines casually grazing around munching on grass in the immense open space surrounding it. Now, this may not alarm anyone. Kind of like the fact that there is only one oil company rebuilding everything in Iraq may not alarm anyone. But, to me this is quite an interesting sighting. Should we be alarmed at one mad cow in our supply chain? Or should we be alarmed at 200 head of cattle grazing in an area where plants probably have their own personalities?
