The capacity to care for others has been exceeded and replaced by the inability to empathize. Makes you wonder, with all the flooding, fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, wars…maybe Nostradamus was onto something. He predicted WWIII would end all wars, the return of the Anti-Christ preceeded by disasters all over the world. hmmm.
It’s like Northern Ireland. Thre is a lack of empathy for others and really the thrill of the fight. Do most people in Northern Ireland really understand why they don’t like another ‘group’ of people….NOPE…do they think they do…YUP….do they not care either way, but insist they are correct…YUP.
If we could figure this out India/Pakistan, Israel/Palistine, Northern Ireland/UK/Ireland, and all other intrastate conflicts would no longer exisit.
(you’d think I got a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies or something)
I agree, but I also don’t think it takes a degree in anything to realize that the problem that’s Always been a problem, and I mean Always, is the inability to truly empathize with someone who holds beliefs contrary to your own. If we could have figured that out no conflicts that ever took place would have ever taken place. I’m optimistic, more than most people, but I have a hard time believing that this will change. The only hope I have, and Dave you should agree with this, lies in globalization and technology. Maybe now that the world is becoming a lot closer together, a lot more accessible, and news can come from blogs, from people really living it, empathy will be easier to come by. Hopefully conflicts like this will stop feeling so far away, and start feeling a lot more real. Until then, I don’t know.
Pervasive racism and xenophobia means that someone born in France, who speaks French, attends French school, eats French food — but who’s parents are of ‘Algerian’ or ‘Senegalese’ descent — will never be considered a French man.
Prejudice of this kind has economic and psychological effects. I read somewhere that a Frenchman (let’s call him Claude) is far more likely to get a job compared to someone with a Franco-African name, (e.g. Mamadou). Unemployment is disproportionately high in immigrant neighborhoods, and therefore, so are welfare entitlements. As pointed out in “The Revolt of Ennui,” “[T]he central failure of this policy, which goes beyond the dubious boundaries between governments right, left and center, is that it has never managed to provide job opportunities for the children and grandchildren of immigrant workers.”
The psychological effects? A people not forgotten, but ignored, are lashing out a society that has marginalized them.
France is not alone. Think about the LA riots. Hurricane Katrina. The US should not point the finger and criticize the haughty French. Unless some siginificant changes happen here, where racism continues to boil beneath the surface and poverty is on the rise, similar events will likely occur on our soil.
Globalization is and will continue to happen. It is not a good thing but is an inevitable thing as it is written in the scriptures. Forget what Nostradamus predicts, just read the Holy Bible. Read the book of Daniel and read the Revelations. Live a life in conformance to Gods rules accept Jesus Christ as your savior and salvation and live an extrodinary life. The 70th week of Daniel will begin with what will look like a very hopeful mideast peace agreement with Isreal….Fall of 2008….write that down. This will mark the commencement of the 70th week. You see this sign and you will know this prophecy has started. Your time to repent and give yourself back to Him will then have a time limit. The lucky ones to make it to the 2nd comming (Fall 2015?) will get to witness the begining of heaven on earth. Do not take the Mark of the Beast (Revelation 13) (2011?) The time between 2011 and 2015 will be hell on earth for those children who have succum to the fallen angel and rebel against the Father.
